Alternative Facts have been bouncing around ever since Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway spoke of them on Meet The Press last Sunday. What are alternative facts you ask? They’re lies. PERIOD. Alternative facts don’t exist, they’re not a thing. This administration has been in office for less than a week and I can’t tell you how many times we’ve been lied to already. And what’s worse, over really unimportant things.

This all started after Press Secretary Sean Spicer called reporters into the briefing room on Saturday afternoon to scream (literally) at the press core. Why was he so angry? Because, according to him, the press was faking pictures and making up lies about the number of people who attended Trump’s inauguration. Said pictures were time-stamped and everyone with eyeballs could see on TV or in person that the attendance was paltry. Obama garnered about 1.8 million people for his first inauguration in 2009…Trump’s was less than 200,000.

The incredibly thin-skinned POTUS cannot stand that he didn’t have millions upon millions of people kissing his feet, so he flat out lied about it. Why? What on earth possessed them to lie about something so easily disprovable? Here, in my opinion, are a few reasons why…

  1. The Donald is a textbook narcissist. He literally does not understand when someone doesn’t love everything about him. This is so dangerous, for a number of reasons, but we can do an entire blog on that later.
  2. It’s another attempt to discredit the media among his followers. They believe everything he says (despite what they can see with their own eyes) while calling all news they disagree with ‘Fake News’. Alternative facts may not be a thing, but cognitive dissonance certainly is. Not only does it keep ‘his people’ ignorant, but it allows his administration to further divide them from the rest of us.
  3. It keeps everything coming from this administration essentially unknowable. There will be people who understand reality and see when a lie is being told. There will be people that will believe anything Trump says no matter what. And there will be people who fall somewhere in between. Meaning people who say ‘well, I guess we’ll never really know’. Those are the ones they are trying to get to. People that will just get tired of it all and stop fighting.

If he lies about something so inconsequential, what else will he lie about? What dangers do we face because of it? My only ask of all of you is to stay vigilant about truth and fact. Don’t take everything you see/hear/read at face value (especially coming from Trump and his brown shirts). Do your research and stay informed. An educated populace is the best deterrent to Trump and his nefarious plans.
