In a surprise to no one, republicans in the Senate chose party and money over the education of America’s children. It was unprecedented that vice president Mike Pence had to come in to break a 50-50 tie. Two republican senators, Lisa Murkowski from Alaska and Susan Collins from Maine, broke with their party and voted with Democrats not to confirm. The 48 senators and Pence showed they have no spines and have fully knelt at the feet of their king Trump.

Pence is the first vice president in history to have to break a tie on a senate confirmation vote. And with that tie-breaker, he has placed the most incompetent know-nothing in charge of education in this country. Unbelievable.

DeVos is wholly unqualified to run the Department of Education. She, nor her children, ever attended public schools. She, nor her children, ever had to take out student loans. She doesn’t know the difference between proficiency and growth. She doesn’t understand that IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Act) is a federal law. She thinks guns should be allowed in schools to fight off grizzly bears. As a devout Christian, many people fear she will push for less separation of church and state in our education system.

During her confirmation hearing, she didn’t answer when asked if she would uphold Title IX on college campuses. She wouldn’t answer when asked whether she supported full accountability across the board, whether the school was public, charter or private. She has spent years defending charter and private schools, while trying to dismantle public education in her home state of Michigan. If you’d like to learn more about how her ideas go, read this…

A Sea of Charter Schools in Detroit Leaves Students Adrift.

Thousands of calls, emails, letters and people protesting for weeks on end seemed to have been for naught. The voice of the American electorate was completely ignored by republicans today. If they aren’t willing to actually represent the people who voted for them, then why are they there? 2018 can’t come soon enough.
